Family Medicine Residents

Julie Tamayo, D.O.

Where are you from?
Chicago, IL but moved to Phoenix, AZ for medical school.

Why did you choose NW Family Medicine Residency?
I chose the Northwest Family Medicine Residency program because I felt welcomed for who I am and for the unique path that brought me to medicine. As someone who has taken a non-traditional journey through medical school, I appreciated a program culture that values resilience, growth, and individiuality rather than a single definition of success.

Family medicine allows me to care for patients across all stages of life while building lasting relationships and I was drawn to a program that emphasizes compassion, teamwork, and residnet well-being. The strong commitment to protecting time outside of medicine and supporting family life reinforced my belief that excellent physicians thrive when their whole lives are supported.

What are your professional interests within Medicine?
I have a strong interest in in-office procedures as well as integrating osteopathic manipulative treatments into the regular care for my patients.

What are your interests or hobbies outside of Medicine?
Outside of medicine, I have a deep appreciation for the arts, especially musicals. I find the talent and creativity a person needs to perform live on a regular basis and how they need to be consistent during every show is absolutely amazing. I love the way the stories draw in the audience to really connect emotionally to the characters and the storyline and give a truly immersive experience. My hands-down favorite musicals to curl up in blanket on the couch with a bowl of popcorn and have an ugly cry are Les Mis, Wicked, and Hamilton.

What are you most excited about for life in Tucson?
I am most excited to enjoy the beautiful view of the Catalina Foothills every day as well as unlimited access to delicious restaurants throughout the city.

Favorite way to spend a day off?
My favorite day to spend a day off is with my partner and our two kids, exploring the town and stopping by hole-in-the-wall places for lunch and dinner and just making memories with them every chance I can get!

Top item on your “Bucket list”?
Top item on my bucket list is to go to a FIFA World Cup game (preferrably either a Spain or USA game)!!!
